Introducing Pierce Smith and his rustic trail signs inspired Address Signs. Celebrating Maine towns and landmarks.
We are proud to have become a key retailer for Cape Neddick's very own Pierce Smith and his reclaimed pine Address Signs.
Pierce is a local Maine artist how immediately saw a close fit with Northern Explorer Supply as a local shop that not only fell in love with his finely crafted designs, but his passion for sustainability, too. His works are a perfect match with our company's purpose and the lifestyles of the many new customers we've had the honor to get to know thus far in our new journey.
With a focus on sustainability, Pierce primarily uses reclaimed pine fence picket materials in the making of his trail-sign-inspired "address signs". His rustic, outdoorsy-themed works celebrate classic Maine vacation destinations--whether that be a town, such as York, our state (Maine), or a local landmark like York Beach.
His goal is to extend the life of existing resources and break the waste cycle by giving once discarded items new value. As one of his first product categories launched in 2024, his address signs started out as part of an 8-foot panel of dog-eared pine fencing, found on the side of the road in Cape Neddick. Once all the nails were removed and the pickets had been separated, cleaned, cut and lightly sanded, Pierce applied the lettering by hand. The colorways are inspired by lobster buoys, giving a nod to the maritime culture of Maine. After each painted letter has dried, he outlines each of them in ink. Finally, all sides of the sign is then sprayed with a clear overlay of clear matte acrylic.
The weathered wood evokes a nostalgic look, while the bright colors and sharp angles give the signs a modern feel. Although these pieces take time, the quality means they will stand up to years of exterior or interior display. We think of Pierce's address signs as heirloom quality items.
